Buick GMC Engine Not Working

Why Is My Car Not Starting?

If you go to start the car one day only to find that nothing happens, you could be dealing with any number of underlying issues. Several potential reasons may explain why your vehicle won't start. These problems can range from simple and benign problems such as an empty fuel tank to more severe issues to the engine, battery, or other mechanical components. You can do some troubleshooting on your own to see if you can figure out the problem before contacting a mechanic or calling for a tow.

Faulty Ignition

Turning the ignition signals your car's engine to turn over, which then makes your car run. If the ignition breaks, your engine won't receive the signal that it needs to start operating. The ignition has a limited lifespan, meaning it can wear out and stop working as designed. If you encounter issues with the ignition, you will need to visit a mechanic for an ignition replacement.

Dead Battery

The battery has the important task of starting your car on demand. However, the battery is another part with a finite lifespan. On most cars, the battery lasts about four years in average condition. If you frequently in cold winter temperatures or spend time driving in the hot summer sun, your car's battery will not last as long. A mechanic can check a battery's health and remaining lifespan with a battery tester. You can also purchase a tester to use at home.

Bad Starter

The starter is a motor that signals the engine to fire and, in turn, makes your car start running. The motor can burn out or otherwise become damaged from moisture exposure. If the starter fails, the engine won't receive the electrical signals it needs to turn on. If it sounds like the engine is trying to turn over but doesn't ultimately reach that stage, a bad motor starter may be the culprit.

Empty Gas Tank

If your car runs out of gasoline, your vehicle won't be going anywhere. An empty gas tank is a common problem that will prevent your car from starting. If there's no gas in the tank, you'll need to get more fuel before starting the car.

Clogged Fuel Filter

A clogged fuel filter is another possible explanation for your car not starting. This problem can generally be avoided by bringing your vehicle in for regular service. Periodically, a mechanic will need to clear out the engine fuel filter to ensure it is free of dirt and debris. If it gets clogged, the engine won't have access to the clean air required to run.
