GMC Introduces Revolutionary CrabWalk Technology for Enhanced Maneuverability in Electric Trucks

GMC is a pioneer in the auto industry for adding novel technology to its cars. Now, automakers are introducing a revolutionary new feature to several EV vehicles called “CrabWalk.” This feature, which is offered on the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 and both the Hummer EV pickup and SUV, allows drivers to move their trucks sideways to avoid obstacles and tough spots on the road or trail. With this technology, GMC brings the concept of conquering obstacles and terrain to a new level.

What is CrabWalk?

CrabWalk is a new, innovative feature offered by GMC for the Hummer EV and the Sierra EV. In both vehicles, the technology works the same way. CrabWalk allows the rear wheels to turn in tandem with the front wheels. Both sets of wheels will turn at the same angle, at up to 10 degrees to the right or left. The technology is available at slow speeds of up to 20 MPH, which makes it ideal for avoiding tricky spots on the trail, avoiding roadway obstacles, and even parking your car.

How Does CrabWalk Work?

Essentially, drivers simply need to bring their car to a stop or a very low speed (just over one MPH) and center the steering wheel. Then, they can press a button called “4-Wheel Steer” on the Hummer EV for four seconds to activate CrabWalk. Drivers with a Sierra EV can simply visit the infotainment screen, select the “Controls” app, hit “Rear Steering,” and then select the CrabWalk feature from there. Once CrabWalk is activated in either model, the car will start moving diagonally.

Drivers should note that certain features and technology are inactive while CrabWalk is turned on. For instance, the vehicle must be moving at a slow speed or stopped altogether to activate CrabWalk. The steering wheel must be held completely still, and the driver must not be using Super Cruise technology. Some advanced safety aids, such as lane-keep assist, are disabled while CrabWalk is in use, which is another reason why it's only available at lower speeds. Once it is activated, CrabWalk may be used at speeds up to 20 MPH. Once drivers exceed that speed, the front and rear wheels no longer move at the same angle.

Once drivers have maneuvered where they want to go, CrabWalk can be turned off again the same way it was turned on.
